Roughly 50 cars have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other smeared cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report initial examinations suggest the fluid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; investigators are currently not informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they added.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have requested to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking political figure stated the attack left him without words and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, referring to the murder of nine people by a assailant aiming at residents of migrant background in 2020.
