The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Athletes will gain the right to challenge specific calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
